Some facts about lightning
Lightning is the number one cause of death in North America from Weather Related Events.
I've been around lightning as a broadcast engineer for about 30 years. HERE'S A QUICK SUMMARY AS IT APPLIES TO MULDREW.
the 30x30 rule.
A... if you see A LIGHTNING flash and THE TIME TO the rumble is less than 30 seconds, then prepare for a storm.....see below for more details.
b....wait 30 minutes after the last flash before standing down from "preparations". OFTEN THE LAST STRIKE SEEMS TO OCCUR NEAR THE END OF THIS WAITING PERIOD.
it is suggested that you do the preparations listed below WHEN A STORM APPROACHES AND THE "DISCONNECT LIST" TOO. THE "DISCONNECT LIST" SHOULD APPLY when you are not at muldrew for any extended period.
LEAVE THE WATER AND GET UNDER SHELTER INDOORS. MAKE SURE THAT YOU ARE NOT THE HIGHEST THING IN THE AREA OR NEAR IT....EG A LARGE TREE. inside......generally stay away from things connected to the outside such as phone lines, power lines and plumbing.
disconnect all "emp" sensitive items around your cottage including microwave ovens, computers including the modem phone connection, answering machines, phones, pumps, low voltage outside lights , satellite systems, and televisions to name a few. DON'T TRUST FUSES OR SURGE PROTECTORS NO MATTER WHAT THEY CLAIM.
IF YOU MUST USE THE PHONE ..... DON'T ...... WAIT ...... A PHONE IS A GOOD ANTENNA AND PUTS A CHUNK OF CONDUCTIVE MATERIAL OR METAL RIGHT BESIDE YOUR BRAIN.
THESE ARE only suggestions, BUT as one broadcast engineering CONSULTANT said to me........ "where do 3 billion electron volts go? .... anywhere they want "
